Mother pulled from SUV in lake charged with attempted murder

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) — A Mississippi woman faces an attempted murder charge after police say she intentionally drove her SUV into a lake with her 2-year-old child inside.

Thirty-four-year-old Cari Campbell Cullum was charged Monday, 10 days after the Sept. 21 incident at the Columbus Lock and Dam, news outlets reported.

The vehicle was found backed into Columbus Lake, Columbus officer Joe Dillon said in a news release. A friend of Cullum’s told police he broke a window on the vehicle to free the woman and the toddler.

“This is a tragic case, and we believe this was not an accident,” Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton said. Shelton says Cullum’s children are in the care of another person. Police say she is a mother of three.

Bond was set at $400,000 for Cullum at an initial court appearance Monday, the Monroe Journal reported.

It’s unclear whether she had an attorney who could comment on her behalf.
